If you want to have medicinal plants in pots or planters, opt for so-called annual plants or perennials. The best known are basil, parsley, marigold, rosemary, verbena, lavender, lemon balm, peppermint, sorrel, linden, sage, verbena, licorice or olive. If you want other medicinal plants, find out well before growing them in pots or planters. Some need to be in the ground.
How are medicinal plants planted?
Medicinal plants should be planted in a mixture of soil and potting soil (50/50). I advise you to take a soil rich in minerals, it is generally the soils for indoor plants that are the richest. Fill your pots and planters, add your plants and water abundantly. The soil of medicinal plants should always be moist and cover the roots. If your plants are placed near a heat source or they are not sheltered from the wind, you should water them regularly and mist the leaves.
Which part of the plant should we use?
It depends on the medicinal plant. On liquorice, we use the roots, on basil, mint or sage, we use the leaf, and on lavender we use flowers. It is also possible to use bulbs, seeds, fruits, tops, sap or bark.
How to dry these plants or parts of plants?
It's very simple, just place your plants on a table and leave them in a dry and above all very well ventilated place. You can also use a dehydrator with which you can dry your plants but also your fruits and vegetables. It's very nice as a machine and very practical if you like to do everything yourself.
And how do we store our medicinal plants?
You put them in glass jars or in metal boxes and you keep them in a dry place and protected from light, like your spices.
