From ornament to work of art, the evolution of wallpaper
The exhibition is a real invitation to travel: we discover 400 years of wallpaper, through different styles and eras. The opportunity to reveal all the richness and complexity of this wall covering, formerly considered as a simple ornament. Becoming decorative and then a work of art, this evolution goes hand in hand with that of technique and great creators who want to shake up traditional patterns (such as Fornasetti, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Christian Lacroix, etc.).
Wallpaper: many functions over the centuries
Conceived as an initiatory journey, the exhibition is structured around 6 themes each taking up a function of wallpaper, ranging from trompe-l'oeil to the most innovative approaches. You will be able to discover the thousand and one ways that the wallpaper offers to "make the wall", by disguising it, inspiring it, telling it, but also by stimulating the imagination and the perception of a room. Enough to fill up on decorative ideas!
Pierre Frey House also in the spotlight
Among these 300 panels is a selection of Pierre Frey wallpapers, a famous publisher and manufacturer of upholstery fabrics. For more details, go to the exhibition "Inspired fabrics, Pierre Frey" also at the Museum of Decorative Arts, which looks back at the history and know-how of the company. On this occasion, Pierre Frey asked 4 contemporary designers (including Marcel Wanders) and 7 international artists to compose a capsule collection by reinterpreting key pieces of the brand. Enough to impress!
Amazingly! Amazingly!
